Jay Kurdy is a Manchester-born rapper, MC, DJ and presenter whose roots go right back to the city’s golden era of rave culture.
He came up through legendary nights and venues including Bowlers, Hysteria and Kinetic, before going on to work across different sides of the music industry. Along the way he’s worked with Eric Martin of Technotronic and shared stages with hip hop greats including SugarHill Gang, Big Daddy Kane and Klashnekoff.
Today, Jay is the rapper for N-Trance, one of the UK’s most successful platinum-selling dance acts, performing with the band at festivals and events around the world. He previously performed as a rapper with legendary Eurodance act Cappella.
But there’s a lot more to Jay’s story than the artists he’s performed with.
For more than six years he ran the Missing in Manchester raves, including two nights at the old Boddingtons Brewery, and played his part in Manchester’s unsigned music scene through the Mums The Word nights.
He’s also been making and releasing his own music throughout that journey. Two mixtapes reached listeners across the UK, US and Asia, while his remix of Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror reached No. 6 on the UK iTunes Hip Hop Chart and No. 2 on the I-Tops Hip Hop Chart.
His work with Drunken Munks is another part of that story, keeping Jay connected to the hip hop side of his music alongside the dance stages he’s become so well known for.
Away from performing, Jay hosts his own show on Unity Radio, adding presenter to a career that’s always revolved around music and connecting with an audience. He also works with upcoming artists through the Unity Academy, passing on the experience he’s picked up over the years.
And he’s far from finished making music himself. New material is in the works, including dance and festival remixes from his own back catalogue, alongside a high-profile charity remix project.
Live
What makes Jay particularly versatile as a booking is that you’re not limited to one type of performance. He can be booked for DJ sets, MC and PA appearances, or a full hybrid set combining DJing, live vocals and MCing, tailored around the event. And with years spent performing in front of crowds around the world, Jay knows how to engage an audience rather than simply stand behind the decks.
